Toronto's First Post Office, Toronto, ON, Canada
Established in 1833, Toronto's first post office is now a museum and Canada Post facility run by the Town of York Historical Society. This post office operated under the British postal service until Canada created its own in 1851. In 1834, this historic building opened as Toronto's first post office.
James Scott Howard, who was the city's first Postmaster, lived there until the Upper Canada Rebellion led to his dismissal in 1837.
In its lifetime, the building served as a school, a biscuit factory, and even a WWI recruitment center. Following a 1987 fire, it underwent restoration and now features unique events, including Letter Writing Socials, and volunteer opportunities.
In 1987, Canada Post even issued a stamp featuring Toronto's First Post Office.
